The Top 100 Most Annoying Pop Moments… We Hate To Love… Allegedly
I watched this television programme last night late on BBC3, which was a repeat from last Saturday. The first of a 2 part show, it’s a run-down of the 100 ‘Most Annoying Pop Moments… We hate To Love’, or at least someone’s idea of them. This first show gave the countdown from 100 to 50, with the usual discussion of each moment and the same old talking heads giving their opinion son them.
I enjoyed the show, but I have a couple of major problems with it, and this tired old format in general. First of all, some of the moments they chose were ludicrous, as in not annoying at all. The Zimmers doing a version of The Who’s ‘My Generation’ was listed, even though I found that great rather than annoying. Also, stuff like the Spice Girls getting back together, which was ridiculed and rounded on by the various celebrities and journos commenting. How is that annoying? It seemed like a lot of the moments were only included so as to be completely up to date, even though the moments themselves have fostered no annoyance from anyone.
As for the format in general, well I hate the way it’s the same people on every single show like this. You can be guaranteed that Paul Morley and Robert Elms will be there. Both allegedly broadcasters, although the only thing I see them on are shows like this, they seem to have an opinion on everything.
They’re basically rent a quotes who get wheeled in front of a camera, asked if they have an opinion on A or B and then espouse that viewpoint on everyone. Do they think they’re more clever or superior to the rest of us?
Also, who picks these moments? There wasn’t a poll to find out what they were, unlike other similar shows. My guess is it will have been some work experience kid, or up his own arse researcher or producer. Which is why there’s so many of the countdown I sit there and think “what, why’s that there?“.
The 2nd part of this show will be shown on BBC3 on Saturday at 10.10pm, and then repeated ad nauseum… it’s cheap television after all. I will be watching, but I’ll also be muting the sound when either Paul Morley or Robert Elms show up, and also shouting at the TV when there’s a frankly not very annoying at all moment placed in the Top 50. Yes, I’m sad.
