Spice Girls Children In Need Comeback Song ‘Headlines’ Deemed C List By Radio 1 Playlist Team

Spice Girls Children In Need Comeback Song ‘Headlines’ Deemed C List By Radio 1 Playlist TeamThe Spice Girls comeback is going very well so far, with almost all venues on their huge world tour, which I detailed here on Pop Buzz UK when it was announced at the end of June, sold out already. But they’re not getting it all their own way by any means.

The girls have recorded a new song, their comeback single, which is called ‘Headlines: Friendship Never Ends’ which is being released as part of the ‘Children In Need’ charity fund-raising event for the BBC.

It’s received mixed reviews so far, with most agreeing it isn’t exactly up to par on the girls older material, which love them or loathe them, was always ultra catchy pop. This song is more like take it or leave it pap. I reviewed it on Brit Music Scene… and was quite cutting about the video.

Now the Radio 1 playlist team have also put the boot in, deciding that the song is only good enough to be categorized as C List. This means that the song will only receive one play per day on the national BBC station.

George Ergatoudis, Radio 1’s Head of Music, told The Daily Mirror:

“The opinion of the Radio 1 playlist team is that the song isn’t strong enough.

“Clearly there’s a huge number of Spice Girls fans out there - look at the tickets they have sold. But ‘Headlines’ is very disappointing. The song simply isn’t strong enough.. it would have been a B-side in their heyday.”

I have to agree with them, as the single is a huge disappointment. I am still a bit surprised by the decision not to plug it though, seeing as it is a charity record.

The song has been available to download for a week, and is expected to début at a paltry number 20 in tomorrows official chart… not really the result the Spice Girls would have been after.

  1. Gerard McGarry Says:

Dave, I think this just goes to show that people will pay money for the experience of seeing the group perform the old hits live onstage. The single is utter rubbish, a very safe play by the girls that may have just backfired on them.

The fact that a BBC radio station refuses to give the Children In Need song a heavy rotation says a hell of a lot.

On a positive note, Mel B looks yummy.

  2. Doug Robertson Says:

Gerard, I’m gay, and even I agree that Mel B looks yummy. I hope she makes it through to the final in Dancing With The Stars, can’t get enough of her. I’ll admit I have watched their Spice World movie from years ago more than once. Or twice. I wish them well on the reunion thing, and even if their new single sucks (haven’t heard it), if it’s for charity, it’s worth promoting.
