Remembering 9/11 | The Day The Twin Towers Fell And The Whole World Collectively Gasped
September 11th has rolled around again, as it keeps doing every year, and luckily it seems this year is another quiet one.
That wasn’t the case 6 years ago though, when America was attacked, and dragged unceremoniously in to a new war for the 21st century.
This was one of those World events where everyone can think back and remember what they were doing when they heard the news, and saw the terrible scenes of carnage happening in New York.
As a Brit, it was no different for me than most Americans, the only thing being I wasn’t likely to know anyone directly or indirectly affected.
I was sat at home on the afternoon (British time) that it happened. My parents were away on holiday, and I also had a week off work to chill out and relax. I was playing Excitebike 64 on my Nintendo 64 when the phone went. My brother had Sky News on and was watching the first plane hit the Twin Towers. He described it at the time as an accident, as that’s what the authorities thought. I quickly turned my game off and sat enthralled while watching the events unfold.
When the second plane hit, everyone knew instantly that this was no accident, and that something very very bad was just starting to unfold. I remember ringing my Mum and Dad and interrupting their holiday to tell them the news. They were out, and watched the footage through a shop window. By then it was pretty much blanket coverage over all of the terrestrial channels.
The rest of the day is a bit of a blur although I do remember having a conversation about a possible war coming from this. I was worried about being called up if the experts predictions of a third World war came true. It really did seem that bleak at the time.
Although I’m not one for platitudes, I’m sat here remembering the victims of 9/11, and also anyone who has suffered as a result of it. That includes anyone who has died in the wars that have occurred since that day.
If the terrorist activities hadn’t succeeded that day I doubt very much whether there would have been either the invasion of Afghanistan, or the war in Iraq. So on this day, my heart also goes out to any civilians or military personnel who have been killed in those conflicts.
A sad day, but one the World will never forget.

It is very interesting to me that everyone, no matter what their nationality, remembers that day. This was not an American tragedy. This was a world tragedy.

You know Dave, for some reason at the time it meant a lot to me that the British were very sympathetic to what happened. I’m not sure why, but it made me feel like you guys were our cousins or something and you were supporting us like family. Sorry if that sounds like corny b.s., but that’s how I felt. To this day I still am grateful that the world (most of it) came together for a brief period.
.
And yes, it’s terrible that most of that was squandered.
