Red Dwarf Series 9 Anyone? | BBC Turn Down Opportunity To Make New Series Of The Cult Comedy
I’m a big fan of the Red Dwarf series, with it’s hilarious take on Sci-Fi films and television series. So I’m gutted to hear that the BBC has turned down the chance to make a ninth series of the hit show.
Series creator Doug Naylor recently issued a statement about the decision at the ‘Dimension Jump’ convention:
“Some time ago, BBC2 decided not to take up their option for a potential Series IX, instead they said they were keen to pursue other projects.”
“They also told us that they weren’t interested in buying the TV rights for the Red Dwarf film, despite liking the script, as they weren’t convinced the film would be a success.”
What a stupid decision that is, as surely they realise Red Dwarf is a virtual institution in this country, and in many cases other countries too? I recently had a guest post here on Pop Buzz UK all about the show called ‘Remembering Red Dwarf‘ and it was written by an American… living in Australia! That’s global appeal BBC, can’t you see what a short-sighted mistake you’re making?
As for the long awaited and oft promised film of the series, I really hope they pull that off some time soon, it would be great to see the characters on the big screen as well as the small.

I LOVE Red Dwarf. Like all shows it got a little meh as it went along. Still… I’d like to see some sort of rebirth.
