Music Single Review: Kaiser Chiefs - Everything Is Average Nowadays
The Kaiser Chiefs made a triumphant return earlier this year with a Number One hit single and album. After ‘Ruby’ comes their 2nd single from ‘Yours Truly, Angry Mob’ called ‘Everything Is Average Nowadays’…
I actually prefer this to Ruby, feeling it has a stronger tune, and also making a nice satirical point about society in 2007. There are a variety of subjects and themes the song uncovers as it goes, with the main focus being on how life is just so average these days, nothing special happens. Whether that refers to the band themselves (recording, touring, interviews etc) or us all as a whole. Everyone is following the craze really rings bells with me, as it seems you’re no-one if you don’t fit into some sort of category these days. Whether it be emo, goth, or indie, youngsters feel the need to label themselves, rather than be individual and comfortable in that individuality.
The video fits the song perfectly, mocking the way everything seems to be manufactured, from the band themselves, to professional fans. It looks like all the creativity is being boxed up, and replaced by drones and robots instead. I can feel where the band are coming from, with politicians and musicians alike seemingly fitting into a mould, rather than creating their own in recent years.
The song came out in the UK last week, and reached Number 19 in the official charts, which is well, pretty average nowadays.
