MTV Europe Music Awards 2006
Last night, the annual back slapping celeb filled, drink fuelled MTV Europe Music Awards rolled into the Danish capital Copenhagen. This year’s show was seen live in 17 countries across the globe and was again dominated by American artists.

Justin Timberlake was the host for the show, and an inspired choice on an evening where he himself came out top. The ever-cool Mr Trousersnake was the big winner, collecting two awards to add to the many already gathering dust in his mansion. He picked up Best Male and Pop Act, which I don’t think anyone could argue with. One man who did his best though was Kanye West, who despite being named Best Hip Hop act earlier in the evening, lost out to the lesser known Justice and Simian in the Best Video category for their We are your friends (Watch it below). When they were collecting their well deserved recognition, Kanye crashed the stage and in a tirade of expletives, announced he should have won the prize for his video Touch the sky because “it cost a million dollars, Pamela Anderson was in it, and I was jumping canyons…And your point?
He continued to rant that “If I don’t win, the award show loses credibility Ah diddums, you didn’t win, get over it.
The Red Hot Chilli Peppers won best album for Stadium Arcadium, but that was their only prize despite being nominated 4 times. The ever lovely and well refined individual that is Christina Aguilera won Best Female, while Depeche Mode somehow won Best group, beating off competition from Keane, RHCP and The Pussycat Dolls. The veteran synth rock trio were one of only two British winners, the other being the excellent Muse as Best Alternative. Inevitably Best song went to Gnarls Barkley for the massive worldwide hit that was Crazy. The Brighton based Kooks were rightly chosen as best UK and Ireland act by MTV UK viewers after a storming 2006.
The main controversy and humour of this year was confined to two of the guest presenters, both mocking Madonna for trying to adopt an African child.
Sacha Baron Cohen, in character as Borat, appeared via video link to say, “My only concern is that this singing transvestite will not be such a good father.
Avid Merrion of Bo Selecta fame was also there to lend a friendly ribbing by dressing as the (not present) faux British singer and stating “I’m getting too old for this shit. I’ve been getting a lot of hoo-ha from the press recently just because I bought a baby. But I’m Madonna, if I want to buy a baby, I buy a flipping baby.
