Manchester Wins Race For First Super Casino
Manchester has beaten tough competition and the bookies odds to become the first city in Britain to be granted a ’super casino’ license. Seaside Resort Blackpool and London’s Millenium Dome were the front runners and favourites for the honour of a regional Las Vegas style casino resort but lost out to the North West city.
Up until now only small casinos have been allowed to exist in Britain, for fear of the effect that open gambling would have on society, especially youngsters who may be drawn in. Until a couple of years ago, bookmakers even had to have blacked out or covered windows so the activities could not be seen from outside. Now that has been lifted and the government has given the go ahead for 17 officially licensed casinos around the UK.
The stigma of gambling and the laws surrounding it were looked at after the increase in popularity of online poker and other odds based games. If people could sit at home making (and losing) money from betting, the government decided it was time to move gambling in to the mainstream.

Manchester will now be able to build a 1,250 machine unlimited jackpot venue, with plans already pinpointing Sportcity, in the Beswick area, to the East of the City centre. It’s thought this could create up to 3,000 jobs in the area, with a whole entertainment complex being built around the casino, including a swimming pool, restaurants and bars. As well as Manchester, other places to be awarded licenses (but for smaller venues) are Hull, Middlesborough, Milton Keynes, Leeds, Luton and Wolverhampton.
Manchester will be used as an experimental test ground for the new legislation, with a full study conducted into the impact it has on the area and population around. I can see this being the first of many new casinos, with gambling becoming one of those personal choice things in this country more so than it has been up to now. As long as controls are kept to stop the young or vulnerable being drawn into a lifestyle they can’t afford, then I don’t see a problem with it. But with debt at record levels in the UK at over £1 and a quarter trillion for a population of about 60 million, this could add to the time bomb that is credit and debt.
