Lost Season 3

As Lost Season 3’s 6 episode mini series comes to an end in the U.S., fans of the show in Britain are preparing for the premiere and episode 1 this week on Sky.
The mini 13-week break for the series in the states is an interesting decision taken by the makers of the show. Intended to ease the woes and frustration felt for the first 2 years of the show, it won’t stop the winter break being a long and painful haul for the passionate fans. The show ended last Wednesday with the episode “I Do” and won’t return to ABC until Wednesday February 7th. Meanwhile, British fans are just now gearing up for episode 1 of Season 3 starting on Sunday 17th November on Sky’s flagship channel Sky One.
For the first two seasons of the hit show, Channel 4 held the rights and aired all the episodes, but last month they were outbid by Sky who nabbed the worldwide phenomenon. They reportedly paid $44 million for the licence, one of the highest amounts ever paid by a British broadcaster for an American show. For that amount of money, if I was a Sky executive, I’d want Lost co-creators Damon Lindelof and J.J. Abrams to introduce each episode wearing chicken suits or giant diapers. But maybe that’s just me. When the show started being shown in the UK, very little was known about it and the dedication of the fans, as well as early viewing figures, must have taken not only Channel 4 but all of their competitors by surprise. It’s little wonder then that when Seasons 3 & 4 were auctioned to the highest bidder the subscription based Sky came up with the big numbers. Apparently Channel 4 was offered the opportunity to match the bid to secure rights but turned it down.

Channel 4 have chosen to fill the gap with the new American comedy Ugly Betty but I can’t see that having the huge effect on popular culture all around the world that Lost has created.
Sky have scheduled Lost straight after 24, meaning British viewers get 2 hours of TV heaven on a Sunday night. The perfect antidote to the “Going back to work blues“. Fans that have patiently waited for Season 3 and resisted the urge to download the show at American pace will not be disappointed. The first 6 episodic story arc contains all the elements we have come to expect and love about the show. It answers some questions but asks double the amount in return. There’s a cliffhanger virtually every week and again, the show isn’t afraid to change the cast members. But I’ll say no more. Full a full rundown of the episodes and theories relating to the show I’ll direct you to Lost TV and Watching Lost… Enjoy!

[...] ‘Ugly Betty’ Coming To UK December 7th, 2006 by DaveP I reported a while back about Channel 4 losing the rights to ‘Lost’ to Sky and replacing it with ‘Ugly Betty’. Well those rumours are now confirmed with sneak peeks and previews of the show being aired in Channel 4 ad breaks over the last few days. From what I’ve seen it looks quite good, although it’s hardly a fit replacement for ‘Lost’ in my eyes. I don’t even think the viewers will necessarily the same, this attracting a more ‘Friends’ crowd. [...]
