Johnny Cash - God’s Gonna Cut You Down
This is the new posthumous song and video by Johnny Cash. The song is from the album American V: A Hundred Highways. Although he died in 2003, he was recording right up to his death and this album is one of the haunting result of those sessions. This video premiered last week in the States and features 36 celebrities including Justin Timberlake, Johnny Depp and Dennis Hopper.
I personally really like it. Being recorded in black and white gives it a fitting sombre mood, which when coupled with Cash’ tones sets up an almost angelic atmosphere. My only reservation is, why have famous and incredibly wealthy people on a video, which has an intro extolling Johnny identifying with the poor and downtrodden. Obviously people such as Chris Martin and Bono have spoken up for the less well off in society but I’m not sure that’s the case for all featured.
It’s a great song, and fitting video directed by Tony Kaye and helped by Rick Rubin, who produced the American series by the ‘Man in Black’. A second album of songs from those final recording sessions “American VI is due for release in 2007. Click here for a full review of A Hundred Highways.
