I Need A Wii!
I want one, I need one, I’m desperate for one, and this particular Wii needs more than a toilet to solve the problem. The Nintendo Wii came out in the States yesterday and has been received with pretty much universal praise. The problem is this piece of gaming innovation isn’t out in the UK and the rest of Europe until the 8th of December. I can’t wait that long, it means keeping my legs crossed in a very sad and unfunny metaphor for another 3 weeks!

Even Japanese gaming nuts have got to wait until December 2nd to get their mitts on this latest Nintendo console. The Wii is the last entry into the next generation home games console market, following the year old Xbox 360 and recently released but severely under stocked Ps3. Nintendo as usual are refusing to conform; whilst Sony and Microsoft are releasing their gargantuan, very powerful graphic driven and expensive marvels, designed to sit in your home as a one stop entertainment centre, the Japanese games company have released a revolutionary console designed around gameplay and getting the player involved directly in the action. The graphics aren’t a huge leap on from the Gamecube but the big factor Wii has to its advantage is FUN. Yes, that 3-letter word us modern gamers seem to forget sometimes is here in abundance, and that to me is very important.
I was sceptical about the Wii; it’s design, performance and especially the control method of remote and nunchuk unit. I even wrote a piece a few months ago about what a bunch of idiots we’d all look using these and how no one would buy it! What was Nintendo thinking? Well, I’ve been put in my place and my whole thinking on the concept has gone full circle now, I love it and think its genius. It’s selling well, there’s plenty of pre-orders being taken elsewhere in the world and I think Nintendo may be on to a winner. With a company’s reign at the top of the gaming wars usually restricted to 2 generations, could this be Nintendo’s return to the peak? We’ll wait and see, meanwhile, I’ll be putting a Wii on my Christmas list along with millions of other people this festive season.

Trust me, the Wii is sooooo much fun. I feel just like you because I have the Wii here, sitting in my living room, and I am unable to use it due to my cabling problem, and I was told by a Nintendo rep that the component cables that I ordered will be “shipping” on November 28th. So, for the time being, I can only play Wii over my brothers house.
There are so many little things that Nintendo did right with this unit. One thing I love is even while the Wii is in standby mode, it really is on, but taking very little energy. The purpose for this is to allow other Wii users to access your Mii’s, allow for certain games to allow other gamers to access your data (think Animal Crossing, basically people can visit your garden and leave messages for you or gifts), and also, if someone leaves you a letter to your Wii, the LED on the disc tray will flash every so often to let you know you have a message waiting.

That sounds very cool BB
Another thing I’ve heard is the Wii soaks up media through Bluetooth, whenever it’s close!
I’m sorry to hear about your cabling problem, at least you haven’t got as long to wait as me eh

[...] Between the 2 robberies, there have been over 4,000 consoles stolen by criminals, which equates to about £1,000,000 worth of brand new valuable hardware snatched from under our noses. This will not only hit Microsoft hard but also leave a lot of kids and adults miserable come Christmas day. The Ps3 launch has been put back to at least March over here, meaning Sony will miss yet another holiday season to push their wares. Nintendo meanwhile seem to be on to a winner with the Wii which is due to be released on December 8th. Pre-Orders started last week and apparently sold out in ultra quick time on Amazon.co.uk as well as other major retailers. The Wii is the console that is getting the buzz right now, beating out the 2 gaming behemoths of Sony and Microsoft for newspaper space. [...]
