His Dark Materals: Golden Compass Preview

All the attention is being focussed on Harry Potter at the moment, and rightly so. With the seventh and final book ‘The Deathly Hallows’ due out on 21st July, and ‘The Order Of The Phoenix’ movie out July 11th, it’s natural to be getting psyched up about the J.K. Rowling fantasy series. But, there’s another British fantasy book being turned in to a film currently and I’m already looking forward to it’s release.
Phillip Pullman’s ‘His Dark Materials’ is a trilogy of books following young heroine Lyra Belacqua on her journey through parallel universes. The three books are all incredible, and I love the style and storyline involved. The first of the trilogy ‘The Golden Compass’ (known as Northern Lights in the UK) was released in 1995 and failed to have the impact of Rowling’s opus. Over the years though, it became a cult classic until everyone and their mother had read them. We all know what that means don’t we? A big Hollywood studio will come sniffing around, and so on December 7th 2007, the first book’s movie adaptation will be released.
This is an early teaser trailer, showing scenes from the film as well as a few backstage snippets…
Starring Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman, Kevin Bacon and Sam Elliott this is a fim full of big names, and has a budget to match. New Line Cinema clearly want a return to the profits of Lord Of The Rings and have chosen this to be their next big book to film conversion. I think it’ll be a different audience who flock to see this, as a lot of adults and children will come to Lyra’s universe fresh without knowing much about it. Whether this puts more pressure or less on the film makers and director, I’m not sure.
I can’t wait to see this film, and to find out whether Hollywood has done a good job of adapting yet another classic piece of British literature. We’ll keep churning them out, and you can keep making the film versions, deal?
