Dom Joly Happy Now?

Dom Joly, the guy who made shouting “Hello as loud as possible into a huge mobile phone famous, is back! He’s appearing in two shows in the UK, one started last night on Sky One, where Dom and his best friend travel around the world getting drunk and seeing what happens. Dom Joly’s Happy Hour is framed as an investigation into “the cultural and traditional aspects of alcohol around the world. It’s a six part series in which the two travel to six countries, drink whatever the locals usually do and generally delve into people attitudes to drinking. For the full story read Dom’s article in the Belfast telegraph.
There’s also a brand new show on the horizon called Happy Now? And as you might have guessed from the name it’s a direct descendant from the huge cult hit Trigger Happy TV from a few years back, which featured such delights as the snail crossing the road…ermm, and the men dressed up as squirrels mugging a man in the park for his nuts. Hang on, I’m better off just showing you I think so here via Google Video is the Best of Trigger happy which does contain very strong language, you have been warned…
You may have noticed the lack of a laughter track on the above video, instead using music as the backdrop. For some reason this works, adds enormously to the atmosphere and makes it superior to some other hidden camera shows.
The new format is currently shrouded in mystery except for a 30 second clip doing the rounds, showing an evolution more than a revolution from the old stuff to the new. Apparently though, the show is being made exclusively for mobile phones. Here’s the short clip…
After the success of two series of Trigger Happy TV in the UK through 2000 and 2001, Dom took the format on the road including World Shut Your Mouth and Trigger Happy US. There was the criticised but original and cult chat shows This is Dom Joly and Being Dom Joly in between but I’m glad he seems to have reverted to the original and hugely funny format that made his fortune.
It may be cheesy, it may have a 99% similarity and huge credit to give to Candid Camera, done 40 years ago but it’s fun, enjoyable, slap happy comedy, which is guaranteed to at least raise a smile. It’s a simple very British humour but still travels and translates very well around the world. And if watching a traffic warden giving a driver a ticket when he’s actually sitting in a traffic jam doesn’t raise a titter, then you need a humour bypass.
