Daniel Radcliffe’s Equus to Close In June
The London staging of Peter Shaffer’s play Equus, starring Daniel Radcliffe and Richard Griffiths is to close in June. In a shock announcement, the show has been revealed to be touring the UK for 12 weeks instead, with Bath being the first stop.
There will be a whole new cast for the play’s British tour, with Harry Potter star Radcliffe bowing out after just an 8 week run. In the show, Daniel received critical acclaim for his portrayal of troubled stableboy Alan Strang, who has an erotic (read perverted) relationship with his horses. f that wasn’t enough, the play, and particularly the casting of kids favourite Radcliffe courted controversy by including a scene where the lead actor appears naked.

According to BBC news, Spokesman Peter Thompson defended the decision to end the run by saying that “Equus had recouped its investment in a record-breaking eight weeks of business since it opened in February, and that director Thea Sharrock wanted the sell-out play to go out on a high“.
In a move that will delight non-British theatregoers, it was announced that a Broadway production is planned for Spring 2008, followed by an Australian production.
So, back to Harry Potter for Daniel, or do you think this play will at least broaden his horizons and prevent him from being typecast?

I certainly think it will help in the future to not just been seen as a kid star. He certainly will never able to overcome being Harry Potter completely, though.

I think it might be quite hard for those who have seen him in the nip to think of him as HP again. Unless the next film is a bit saucier…
And “cheers!” for the link, Dave.

Good post, but I HATE EQUUS!
But, yes, I think it’ll help him branch out from just HP.

Winnie, I agree, he’ll always be HP in most people’s eyes.
Ian, I don’t think it’ll be THAT saucy… although Ron and Hermione may get it on in the last book/film… is she legal yet?
Emma, why do you hate Equus?
