His Dark Materals: Golden Compass Preview

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Golden_Compass.jpg

All the attention is being focussed on Harry Potter at the moment, and rightly so. With the seventh and final book ‘The Deathly Hallows’ due out on 21st July, and ‘The Order Of The Phoenix’ movie out July 11th, it’s natural to be getting psyched up about the J.K. Rowling fantasy series. But, there’s another British fantasy book being turned in to a film currently and I’m already looking forward to it’s release.

J.R.R. Tolkiens The Children Of Hurin

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

The first new proper book by J.R.R. Tolkien for twenty years was released worldwide yesterday and immediately sold out in many stores throughout the UK. The Children Of Hurin deals with the race of men, and Hurin, a hero of the first age. Set long before the time of The Lord Of The Rings, it’s set in middle earth long before there was any sign of Hobbits. The story features Elves and Dwarves, though a more sinister race than the ones we know and love from the Lord Of The Rings. In this book, Sauron is only the lieutenant of Morgoth, the fallen Valar, rather than being the uber villain we have grown up with.

Courts Reject Da Vinci Code Copy Lawsuit

Dan Brown

The verdict is in and according to Britain’s Court Of Appeal in London, The book ‘The Da Vinci Code’ by Dan Brown is not a copy. Authors Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh sued Brown’s publisher, Random House Inc. claiming he copied from their non-fiction best selling book ‘The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail’. Their book was first released in 1982 and controversially dealt with the issues that would later be turned into a fictional bestseller and Hollywood movie. (more…)

Notes On A Scandal - Film Trailer

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

This new film, starring Dame Judi Dench and Cate Blachett looks like an incredibly well acted drama. Adapted from Zoe Heller’s Man Booker Prize nominated 2003 novel of the same name, it’s a mean psychological thriller concerning deceit and betrayal. Judi stars as the machiavellian school teacher Barbara Covett, while Cate is a quiet family woman, whose life is changed when she starts an ill-conceived affair with a 15 year old pupil. Judi’s character uses the knowledge of this affair to further her relationship with Cate, in ominous and nasty ways.

With two of the best female British actors ever and a stellar suporting cast including Bill Nighy and Emma Kennedy, this looks like a must see for fans of the genre. It was available at limited cinemas around Christmas and is now on at cinemas nationwide.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

Friday, December 8th, 2006

For all you Happy Potter fans, and I know there are tons of you out there, here is a video compilation of clips and previews from the upcoming film ‘Order Of the Phoenix’. Due for release on July 13th, this film of the fifth book out of the 7 part series already has fans excited, and I’m one of them.

‘The Order Of The Phoenix’ is one of my favourite of the HP books, second only to ‘Goblet Of Fire’ which I think they did a brilliant job of last year, so I can’t wait to go to the cinema to see this. The cast looks amazing again, with all the regulars such as Daniel Radcliffe and Alan Rickman joined by Imelda Staunton and the gorgeous Helena Bonham Carter amongst others. (more…)
