New Pop Buzz UK Banner And Stuff!

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Look, up there, yes, above you, see what that is? It’s a spunky new banner for Pop Buzz UK, and it’s a work of genius!

The 451 Press network has finally relented and let us design and post our own banners for our blogs. I’m sure you’ll agree it makes a welcome addition to the blog, and makes your friendly pop culture blogger stand out from the crowd a wee bit. Ok, so I’m not exactly Perez Hilton or TMZ quite yet, but I’m getting there slowly.

Music Single Review: The Cribs - Men’s needs

Monday, May 14th, 2007

The Cribs are back with a new single, the first from forthcoming album ‘Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever’. This first single called ‘Men’s Needs’ carries on from where ‘Mirror Kissers’, and ‘Martell’ left off, with a very similar sound from the Leeds based band.

The video from YouTube features some nudity, except actually it doesn’t as it’s all been blacked out. It does contain a bit of comedy blood and guts though so watch it now…

The first thing I noticed from the video was the fact the guys haven’t smartened up at all, with their grungy, almost dirty look carrying on in to this third album. They’ve never been ones to worry about looks, with meaning and content much more important. The video still looks cheap, even with the amateur special effects, but I enjoyed watching it, and it gave me a few laughs. It’s a bizarre but strangely fitting video for this song, I just which it hadn’t been censored, as the girl is a great gothy almost emo looking girl who isn’t bad looking.

The Zimmers - My Generation

Friday, May 11th, 2007

The Who were British pioneers of the the new rock scene during the Swinging Sixties, and inspired generations of musicians with their sound, energy on stage, and general awesomeness. What I never expected to hapen though, was for them to inspire a bunch of wrinkly old age pensioners to team up and form a band, but that’s exactly what has happened.

The Zimmers - My Generation

No, that isn’t Roger Daltrey singing, or Pete Townshend playing the guitar, instead it’s some oldies singing ‘My Generation’. The Zimmers have covered the classic Who track as part of a documentary which will be shown on BBC2 in May.

A Slice Of Pop Pie: Are Starbucks Devil Worshippers?

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

This is my weekly round-up of the best pop culture blog posts from all over the blogosphere. I realised a long time ago that I can’t cover every story that breaks, so instead I bring you the ones that have interested me in this nice little feature I like to call ‘A Slice Of Pop Pie‘…

Berkeley Place wrote an article called The 25 best indie rock albums ever… according to the blogosphere, which does exactly what it says on the tin. I agree with most of the choices, and love the fact the UK’s own ‘Bloc Party’ made it on to the list.

WorldNetDaily featured a story about an Ohio woman who was shocked after reading an anti-God message published on the side of a Starbucks coffee cup. I don’t really see why she was so disgusted that her blood boiled. It’s a great campaign, and it’s just voicing one person’s opinion, so what’s the problem? I read pro-Christian messages all the time, and never get upset, we’re all entitled to believe what we want surely?

YouTube - Star Trek Meets Monty Python

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

I thought it was time to take a leaf out of the YouTube Digger’s book… he’s a great guy, funny, devilishly handsome, and also very modest! So I’m going to start trawling the archives for some clips which will fit on Pop Buzz UK, and show some funny, clever, and downright genius moments from British pop culture.

We start with a clip combining one of the great American sci-fi shows with probably the daddy of classic alternative comedy, as I present to you Star Trek meets Monty Python! Dun dun dunhhhhhh…

A Slice Of Pop Pie: Spam Spammy Spam

According to the traveller’s weblog Gadling, British Airways edited Richard Branson out of in-flight copies of Bond film Casino Royale. The rival Virgin Airways boss’ cameo appearance was strangely absent from the version shown on BA flights. 3 words for you… petty, childish, spiteful.

The Virginia Tech Shootings - A View From The UK Part 1

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

Media Coverage - American lives more important than others?

I’m writing this on the 23rd of April, a week to the day of the Virginia Tech shootings, long enough since the incident for me to have a comprehensive and fair view on it, but with it still fresh in my mind. Like others around the world, I watched the news reports filter in of a shooting happening in America, and by mid afternoon, we all knew it had ended in a massacre. I was upset, with my heart and head going out to the victims and their families. And although that sympathy still holds true, some things have occurred since which have left me wondering about the whole saga, the way it’s been reported, and how even in this day and age, it seems we are not all born equal.

Muse - Invincible

Friday, April 6th, 2007

This is Muse with their brand spanking new single ‘Invincible’ out in the UK on Monday 9th April. It’s the fourth single to be released from the haunting yet brilliant album ‘Black Holes And Revelations‘ which itself came out last July. The song is a fantastic floaty journey through what seems to be a person’s doubts and their need to overcome obstacles and come out the other side. It has a kind of romantic feel to it, yet the almost march like drum beat moves the pace of the song on nicely. About half way through the song, the strong bassline which is one of Muse’s strengths, comes in and from there the song builds up to a crescendo. (more…)

Louis Theroux Meets The Most Hated Family In America

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

Although not religious myself, I have nothing against anyone who is, whatever the denomination, and read and contribute to findreligion.net quite regularly. But when it gets to the sorts of levels I saw displayed on TV this week, then I think it’s time something was done. Read on dear viewer, read on…

Louis Theroux

Louis Theroux is a legend, a geeky awkward looking British guy who either by luck or by carefully skilled and judged journalistic techniques, gets under the skin of various people to find out what makes them tick. This week, a programme was shown where he surely had his toughest assignment yet. He had to meet, live with, get on and try to understand people who have been billed as “The Most Hated Family In America“, and that’s by themselves! (more…)
