Brit Awards 2008 | The Winners, Losers, Performers and Gossip From The Annual Brits Music Event
The Brit Awards took place tonight in Earls Court, London, and here we have all of the latest news, gossip, winners and losers.
The annual event was presented by the Osbourne clan, with Sharon and Kelly taking most of the stage time. Unfortunately, Sharon spent the whole evening looking and acting drunk, while Ozzy sat in the background shaking.
There was a particularly memorable moment when Vic Reeves came on to the stage to present the award for Best British Album. He was pissed as a fart, and so he and Sharon fought over who was going to announce the winner. That was about the only controversy on a night celebrating a year of great British music.
Most of the awards went the way I had expected, or at least secretly hoped for. The big winners of the night ended up being Take That, Arctic Monkeys, and Foo Fighters, who all walked away with two awards each.
Leona Lewis ended up as the biggest loser, as even though she managed to win The X Factor in 2006, she managed to lose in all four of the categories she was nominated in.
This included losing the Best British Female prize to Kate Nash and the British Breakthrough trophy to Mika.
The show was punctuated with some brilliant performances, and some surprising, yet great collaborations. The show began with Mika teaming up with his friend Beth Ditto for a duel attempt at Standing In The Way Of Control and Love Today.
Rihanna then teamed up with Klaxons to produce the weirdest sound of the night, but it also worked very well, a fact borne out by how Rihanna has used a well known riff on all of her hits to date.
The show wrapped up in style with winner of the Outstanding Contribution To Music award Paul McCartney performing a medley of hits. The solo stuff went down okay, but the place came to live when he and his band did a rendition of Hey Jude which had everyone singing along.
Overall, a good show, and a good way to celebrate another brilliant year in British music.
I live blogged the event over at Brit Music Scene, so feel free to relive it all with my added snarky comments: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4.
