Brit Awards 2007
Wednesday night saw the Brit awards 2007 take place at Earl’s court arena in London. The annual awards ceremony for the British music scene was shown on ITV, completely live for the first time in almost 20 years. That was the shambolic performance by topless pin-up Samantha Fox and Mick Fleetwood, when almost everything went wrong, and these 2 amateur presenters couldn’t deal with it. No such problems this year, when man of the moment Russell Brand handled everything sublimely, and was funny to boot!
The big winners this year were the Arctic Monkeys, with no surprises that they won both Best British Group, and Best British Album for ‘Whatever people say I am, that’s what I’m not’. They shared the top billing and award take home with The Killers, who won both International Group and International Album for ‘Sam’s Town’.
The rest of the awards were pretty evenly shared out, with highlights being The Fratellis winning ‘Best Breakthrough’, and ‘Best Live Act going to the always superb and thoroughly deserved Muse. The gorgeous and very talented Amy Winehouse beat off tough competition from Lily Allen and Corinne Bailey Rae for ‘Best Female Solo Artist’. James Morrison and Take That rounded out the British winners on the night with ‘Best Solo Male Artist’ and ‘Best British Single’ respectively. The latter was a weird tale of highs and lows, with the morning of the Brits finding former bandmate Robbie Williams splashed all over the papers for entering rehab. How the fortunes turn!
In the International catergories, Justin Timberlake won ‘Best Solo Artist’ with Nelly Furtado beating beyonce amongst others to the female equivalent. ‘International Breakthrough Act’ went to Orson after a storming year.
Live performances included The Scissor Sisters opening the show with a blistering rendition of ‘I don’t feel like dancin”. Others to stand out were Amy Winehouse wowing the crowd with ‘Rehab’ and RHCP knocking the socks off the normal pundits in the arena. Snow Patrol sang what should have been song of the year ‘Chasing Cars’ and it was left to ‘Outstanding Contribution To Music’ winners Oasis to finish the whole shebang with a medley of hits. It was great to see the seminal Indie Britpop band perform at the awards, with as Russell pointed out,m maybe their best line up ever, including Ringo Starr’s son Zak Starkey on drums. Although Liam’s voice isn’t as strong as it once was, the swaggering was still there and Noel’s brilliant guitar playing continues to dominate.
All in all, this was a great awards show, and one of the best Brits ceremonies I’ve seen. And here’s a couple of highlights thanks to YouTube. Enjoy…

[...] The band hail from Glasgow in Scotland, and have only been together just over 2 years. The band’s name is taken from bassist Barry, whose original surname is Fratelli, the other members of the band then adopted that pseudonym and are now known as Jon Fratelli, Barry Fratelli and Mince Fratelli. At this year’s Brit Awards, they won the Best British Breakthrough Act, voted for by Radio One listeners, to top off an almost perfect few months. [...]

[...] The annual event was presented by the Osbourne clan, with Sharon and Kelly taking most of the stage time. Unfortunately, Sharon spent the whole evening looking and acting drunk, while Ozzy sat in the background shaking. [...]
