‘300′ Film Preview and Trailer

by

This is the new film called ‘300′ which came out last Friday in the UK. It looks an intriguing film, being an adaptation of the graphic novel 300 by Frank Miller, which was itself inspired by ‘The 300 Spartans’, a 1962 film starring Richard Egan.

Directed by Dawn Of The Dead’s Zack Snyder, it’s a semi historical account of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC in which 300 spartans fought to the last man against Persian King Xerxes (played by Rodrigo Santoro). The odds are stacked heavily against Spartan King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) as the oposing army number 1 million soldiers. The film delves into historucal fantasy as all manner of fantastical creatures are introduced to the plot.

The film follows the plot and style of the graphic novel very precisely, giving it a strange, almost surreal look, similar to Sin City. With a budget of $60 million, the film was shot at Icestorm Studios in Montreal using bluescreens. All the lighting, backgrounds and sets were then filled in during post-production. Ghislain St-Pierre, who lead the team of artists, described the effect: “Everything looks realistic, but it has a kind of a gritty illustrative feel.

The film was rated ‘R’ and released in america on March 9th in both Imax and conventional cinemas. It grossed $70,885,301 in it’s opening weekend, making it the 19th best opening weekend gross in box office history, just behind The Lost World: Jurassic Park. The film has divided opinions around the world since it’s release and that’s sure to continue. Most people are agreed that visually, it is spectacular but that the historical accuracy and one dimensional characters let it down.

If you have seen it, let me know what you think, and if not, why not go and make your own mind up (what do these movie reviewers and so called experts know anyway)!
