20/02/07 New Music Picks Of the Week
It’s time for my pick of this week’s new single releases here in the UK, and this week sees some beauties. All courtesy of YouTube of course so without further ado…
We start with the Kaiser Chiefs new song ‘Ruby’, the first to be released from the album ‘Yours Truly, Angry Mob’ which is released next Monday. The Leeds band will be hoping to recapture the success of first album ‘Employment’ which gave us such modern classics as ‘Every Day I Love You less And Less’ and ‘I Predict A Riot’. I think ‘Ruby’ is a great comeback single, and pure pop. They haven’t changed their sound significantly but enout to give fans something to chew on.
Next up is American beauty and god’s gift to men Beyonce with ‘Listen’ from the album ‘B-Day’. Despite the name of the album always bugging me because of it’s similarity to bidet, I think Beyonce is growing all the time as a solo artist and performer. This single shows off her voice to the nth degree and just cements her place at the top of the female divas list.
Sophie Ellis-Bextor is back with a glorious slice of pop schmaltz in the form of new single ‘Catch You’. From the new album, her 3rd ‘Trip The Light Fantastic’ which isn’t out until May in the UK. I think it’s great, really catchy and has enough of a kick to propel her back into the limelight. She also seems to have grown into her face (without being rude) and is looking better than ever.
My last pick of the week, which isn’t very mainstream, is British rapper Plan B with ‘No Good’. What struck me at first was the video, which is a stop motion effort very much like old skool peter Gabriel song ‘Sledgehammer’… but with a rapper. The song and his rapping style take a bit of getting used to but I love this song and the nod in the chorus to ‘The Prodigy’. This song is from the album ‘Who Needs Actions When You Got Words’ and is a re-issue from 2005. Be sure to check out the rest of his stuff.
